Grammar Focus — The Verb "To Be" (am / is / are)

Positive sentences

Subject Verb "to be" Example
I am "I am from Canada."
He / She / It is "She is a teacher."
You / We / They are "We are happy."

Negative sentences — add "not"

Subject + am / is / are + not + ...
"I am not from England."    "He is not a student."    "We are not tired."
Short forms: I'm not  |  He isn't / She isn't  |  We aren't / You aren't / They aren't

Questions — put the verb before the subject

Am / Is / Are + subject + ...?
"Are you a student?"  —  "Yes, I am." / "No, I am not."
"Is he from England?"  —  "Yes, he is." / "No, he isn't."

Tip: The verb "to be" is the most important verb in English. Always match the verb to the subject: I am, she is, they are.
